I had the pleasure of attending StyleCon Orange County 2017 this past weekend. It was my first time going so I did not know what to expect. I also was introduced to the idea and tickets via my association with Style Collective.
I arrived early to get the most out of the event. Outside there were excited young volunteers that directed you to lines and to pick up your “swag bag”. This bag was no joke! It was stocked with samples of many things coupons, beauty products, snacks, and a magazine.
I was off to look at the many booths. Most were beauty related. One was actually an RV that was refurbished into a manicure lounge called Polished Perfect by Twila True. They have three locations throughout southern california and my non-gel manicure is still going strong!
I then went to meet a fellow physician by the name of Dr. Anjali Butani to review her skincare line. A dermatologist and entrepreneur, her line focuses on several aspects of anti-aging. Great packaging and I will be trying her 3 step products soon ( see here )
Another beauty booth was for LeMieux based in Pasadena. Their claim to fame is their mask. I received a couple of samples so will be trying that out as well.
I decided to have a seat and drink my delicious rose water by H2Rose and listen to some guest speakers one of whom was India Hicks. India owns a lifestyle brand and is known for being a business woman who starts up other business women. Her discussion was upbeat and encouraging especially to middle aged women who were starting their careers in this realm. (Did you know she was 678th in line for the British throne?! Prince Charles is her godfather and second cousin).
While I was sitting down and enjoying the speeches and discussions a woman by the name of Kate asked me of I had heard of SEP Beauty. I had not but she gave me a few samples of their liquid sticker nail polish. SEP is a Korean beauty company that has just launched and their products are available online at Nordstrom. The idea of liquid sticker nail polish is great for busy women: it can peel off when you are done with it! Will be trying out my two colors soon and report back to you ?.
All of a sudden there was some commotion around one of the booths and cameras flashing. Gretchen Rossi had arrived with her partner Slade from the Real Housewives of Orange County. She was there promoting her successful handbag line. I have to say her booth was probably the most aesthetically pleasing. She was very kind and sweet. When I came up to take a picture she chatted for a bit and seemed suprised by the attention from everyone. I jokingly asked if she missed the OC show and she tried not to laugh but we both laughed. At the end of the day creating a thriving business of your own is a zillion times superior to being a reality tv housewife (which most of the time seems full of unnecessary drama and catty women ie, fun to watch but not to be a part of ?).
Finally I was able to chat with Swati Mandela. She gave a wonderful interview about her humanitarian goals but mostly her life goals and that whatever she did now was also for her daughter. Several years ago her and her sister had done a reality show in South Africa which was met with criticism as she is the granddaughter of Nelson Mandela. After that time she decided to create a fashion label that has been growing. Beautiful fabrics, custom designs and tailoring are their focus. She was very bubbly and down to earth. She talked a lot about being a Mom and wanting to be a role model for her daughter more than anything else.
All in all I was pleasantly suprised by the event. I enjoyed trying out new beauty items and learning about different people’s paths to the beauty and fashion industry. Most of all it was inspiring to see that most of these successful women were Moms and that for many this was a second or third career. I look forward to StyleCon 2018!
